Description

Hackteria BioLab // Create Your World

The Hackteria BioLab introduces the world of microorganisms to children (age 7-10). Using a hacked microscope as the focal point, the participants will be introduced to microscopy, culturing living organisms and building simple tools to engage with the microscopic and the natural world around them. At the end of the workshop they will be able to take home little amulet Petri dishes with their own “living” fingerprints, a yeast powered balloon and simple bio-accoustic ear amplifiers. With this workshop we hope to emphasize that observing life is not just fun, but also takes time and patience.

The workshop will consist of several modules that will introduce children to collecting micro-organisms, observing them and classifying them. They will get to culture their own organisms and observe the reactions between the organism and its environment. They will also construct tools that will help them identify complex and intricate relationships that make up an ecology. The children will be introduced to a laboratory environment where the lab becomes less of an intimidating space and more of a space to spark their curiosity.

Modules

Microscopy

This is an introduction to microscopy where the children will explore their environments, collect samples, observe them and compare them with other samples.

Bacterial Jewellery

The Bacterial Jewellery module comes as a take away amulet that has a living fingerprint of the participant.

Yeast powered balloon

This is a balloon inflates as a result of the yeast growing and interacting with its environment

Bio-Accoustic Ear amplifier

This is a simple amplifier built with cardboard that augments their perception of sound.

BioEngineering introduction for 8 yr olds

They will build body extenstions that will augment their touch perception.

The Lab Book

Recording observations is an important aspect of laboratory life. This module will teach them to collect and record data.

About Hackteria

Hackteria is a collection of Open Source Biological Art Projects started in February 2009 by Andy Gracie, Marc Dusseiller and Yashas Shetty, after their collaboration during the Interactivos?09 Garage Science at Medialab Prado in Madrid. The aim of the project is to develop a rich web resource for people interested in or developing projects that involve DIY bioart, open source software, and electronic experimentation. As a community platform, Hackteria tries to encourage scientists, hackers and artists to combine their expertise, write critical and theoretical reflections, share simple instructions on how to work with life science technologies, and co-operate on the organization of workshops, festivals and meetings. The Hackteria project is supported by: KulturRaumSH ,Migros Kulturprozent and the Srishti school of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore.

About SGMK

The Swiss Mechatronic Art Society (SGMK, established in 2006) is a collective of engineers, hackers, scientists and artists that joined to collaborate and promote on creative and critical uses of technology. They develop DIY technologies and organize collaborative events, such as a yearly research-camp in the mountains and local regular workshops in electronics, robotics, physical computing, diy-biology, lofi-music etc. They run a public hacker space „MechArt Lab“ (since 2009) and organize the international diy* festival, held every year in Zürich since 2005. They also cooperate with various socio-cultural organisations to hold creative technology courses at schools and youth communities. With the „diy makeaway“, a series of mini-workshops for kids and other open-minded people, they have been present internationally at various exhibitions and festivals, such as SHIFT Festival in Basel, at Copy!, Poolloop and Dorkbot in Zürich, MediaLab Prado in Madrid, CTM.09 in Berlin, CEMA in Bangalore, Cellsbutton#03 in Yogyakarta and many more.

Yeast powered balloons

ON SITE CO2 GENERATOR:

  • one giant (25 L) bottle with tube vent
  • 25 L of water
  • 3-6 kg of sugar
  • 1/2 packet of SuperHiva
  • detergent

Dissolve the sugar in 3 L of boiling water, add cold water to final volume, seal top and place tube in a bottle filled with water and detergent; takes 8 h for the fermentation to peak and lasts approx. 24 h; balloons filled with CO2 don't float very well, as they are heavier than air

TAKE-HOME VERSION:

  • sugar (10 kg)
  • fresh baker's yeast (20 packets)
  • balloons
  • bottled water (2 trays)
  • plastic teaspoons (1 bag)
  • cardboard or paper (for DIY funnel)
  • optional (for better results) yeast extract or peptone (nutrients)

Add 15 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of nutrients, a small chunk of fresh yeast (the size of 1 euro coin) to the water, close lid, shake until the sugar is dissolved; remove cap and place the balloon on top; place in a warm place; it takes about a day to see the balloon blow up

  • 1 box of smallest plastic Petri dishes available
  • agar (13 g/L)
  • 0,5 kg potatoes/L
  • 10 g sugar/L
  • gauze
  • string
  • glue-gun
  • scale
  • knife
  • pressure cooker
  • glass container to fit inside pressure cooker
  • burner (for sterility)
  • hotplate (to cook the medium)

Slice potatoes and boil them in 1 L of water for 1 h; drain the liquid through a sieve and gauze to get rid of the potatoes; add 10 g of sugar and 13 g of agar; stir; pour liquid in glass container, add enough water to the pressure cooker to cover the bottom (0,5 cm); heat under pressure for 20 min; let steam out; pour medium into plates (0,25 cm) by a burner; let set for at least 4 hours

For the living bacterial jewelry press gently onto plate, seal Petri dish with glue gun and add string. Colonies will appear in a day or two, at first bacterial cultures, as the culture ages filamentous fungi will overgrow. Some other examples - slant cultures, and in the large petri dishes, cultures grown out of items collected from the forest or water from puddles.

Important: the samples aren't dangerous to health, however tell the kids to keep the Petri dishes closed. It is perfectly fine to throw them in the trash.

Cut a piece of cardboard in two places, fold to make a shell-like shape, staple or glue. Attach the elastic and enjoy the improved perception of the soundscape. Focus on how much easier it is to locate objects emitting sounds.

Attach magnet to finger. Explore the changed sense of touch as you pass over metal objects, electric wires while currency runs through them and other magnets. For a more profound effect, do it with your eyes closed.
