The Open Kirlian is an open source device to look at the Kirlian effect around your fingers. The Kirlian Effect shows a a visible electro-photonic glow of an object (plasma) in response to pulsed electrical field excitation.

The development of the Open Kirlian Device was part of the outcome from a co-lab with Maurizio Martinucci aka TeZ (NL/IT) and Urs Gaudenz GaudiLabs (CH).

This Do-It-Your-Self (DIY) project can be built from low cost commercial components and 3D printed parts. The device includes a high voltage generator - build it at your own risk and be sure to inform your self about the potential dangers. The device is inspired by a commercial product, Bio.Well.

The device is a closed boy with a hole to stick your finger in. Inside the hole you can touch the glass plate mounted on the top of the box. You then peek into the viewer while pressing the high voltage activation button and you should see the Kirlian glow around your finger. In the viewer a lens can be mounted to see the effect from closer. In the bottom part of the box the high voltage generator and a LiPo Battery with charger to power it is mounted. The device must be grounded while operating to avoid electric shock to the person.

What you need to build it:

  • 3D printed parts (find the files on Thingiverse here)
  • High voltage generator (ebay type "20KV High-Voltage-Power-Generator-Step-up-Boost")
  • Lipo Battery 3.4V
  • Lipo Battery Charger (ebay type "Mini 5V 1A Power Bank Charger Circuit Board 18650 Powerbank DIY")
  • Push Button
  • Banana jack and cable for grounding
  • ITO conductive glass 50x50 mm (ebay)
  • conductive tape or conductive glue to connect a wire to the ITO glass
  • Lens 25mm (ebay "Google Cardboard Lens 25mm")
