  • Other than Plastics Plastics Plastics... mobile lab or any modern activites rely heavily on the material of plastics, aspecially when it is so cheap with a good variability. I have experienced many workshops and project people just use them blindly. And it is so light, it flys everywhere with colourful appearances. With HLab14, I would like to rethink the usage of plastic in the practices of diy bio art and lab, tools and equipments. Can we replace plastics with other material? how does it affect the process and perhaps the result? What YOG has to offer for the alternatives? And may the act and process sounds different acoustically? Anyhow, plastic is fine but boring. / Pei

Mud Batteries / Microbial fuel cells

5-.6, so we need additional 15

  • 1-2 cheap multimeters from the pound shop
  • fresh daphnia (?), maybe
  • the electronic parts should be delivered this morning, let's hope.

otherwise we improvise.

attached is a draft of the slides i'll go through. so it's an introduction into our definition of bioelectronix, examples of projects from/for the amateur biologist and showing the diversity of definitions of it, with stories from science/tech and artists working in the field.


then a minimal intro into classical electronics, such as ohm's law, resistance, current, voltage. and we solder something... it's a simple 4093 NAND gate oscillator, also called "Vive-la-Resistance". the circuit is attached. we do free wired soldering. pin 7 (GND) and 14 (VCC) are connected to the battery. all the unused pins are cut off. pin 1 and 7 are soldered together on the back of the chip. a capacitor from pin 2 to GND (7). a speaker from pin 3 to GND. and know we can play around with resistance between pin 2 and 3 (instead the potentiometer that is in the attached schematics), skin resistance, fruit resistance, light dependant resistor with daphnia on the them etc...

and in the end the participants should get the idea of power, aka watt, and what that means with the experiments we do, the lemon battery and the MFC.
