The Hackteria BioLab introduces the world of microorganisms to children (age 7-10). Using a hacked microscope as the focal point, the participants will be introduced to microscopy, culturing living organisms and building simple tools to engage with the microscopic and the natural world around them. At the end of the workshop they will be able to take home little amulet Petri dishes with their own “living” fingerprints, a yeast powered balloon and simple bio-accoustic ear amplifiers. With this workshop we hope to emphasize that observing life is not just fun, but also takes time and patience.

The workshop will consist of several modules that will introduce children to collecting micro-organisms, observing them and classifying them. They will get to culture their own organisms and observe the reactions between the organism and its environment. They will also construct tools that will help them identify complex and intricate relationships that make up an ecology. The children will be introduced to a laboratory environment where the lab becomes less of an intimidating space and more of a space to spark their curiosity.

Body modifications, enhancing human performance, Marvel comics super heroes

The children will be introduced to a laboratory environment where the lab becomes less of an intimidating space and more of a space to spark their curiosity.

The 'BioCyberKidzz' workshop has been developed as a result of collective brainstorms of many individuals and communities that are devoting their rich experiences in creating the alternative crossovers between arts and science. The workshop is presented as part of the BioTehna project initiated in 2012 by Kapelica Gallery and Hackteria | Open Source Biological Art. BioTehna is a platform to initiate curiosity and encourage experimentation and research in the field of life sciences. Through creative and innovative combinations between nature and technology and the inspiring guidance of artists and researchers.

The BioTehna project is supported by a grant through the Swiss Contribution to the enlarged European Union.
