Day 1 (11/01/2013):Creating a Microscope out of an external webcam.

Group member: Akshaya

Materials Required:

1)An external webcam

2)A laptop(to view the real & enlarged image)

3)Super glue

4)A screw-driver set

So all you need to do is, dismantle the webcam, take out the lens, flip it, and place it on the microprocessor. Adjust the position of the lens and glue the them onto the processor only when you obtain a clear image. We tested the microscope by holding the lens to the laptop screen and were able to view the RGB pixels.

This method was later used to view the veins of leaves and particles in dirty water.

The day ended with a video chat with Sachiko Hirosue, who briefed us on her work. [Note that the images are blurry probably because of the dried film of glue on the lens.]

Day 2 (12/01/2013): Discussing the relationship between 'science and technology' and 'art and design'. We discussed the relation between science & technology and art & design, and came up with a conclusion that technology is a tool that comes in handy when we study science. As quoted by Yashas, "Technology is Science's sexy daughter"!

We also came up with the conclusion that, in some ways, what Technology is to Science, Art is to Design. Somehow the discussion led to the topic of Religion, its existence and in what ways does it differ from science.

(Have to research E.coli, Bacteria, Yeast, and fungus!)

Day 3 (17/01/2013): The Ganzfeld Experiment:

In a typical ganzfeld experiment, a "receiver" is placed in a room relaxing in a comfortable chair with halved ping-pong balls over the eyes, having a red light shone on them. The receiver also wears a set of headphones through which white or pink noise (static) is played. The receiver is in this state of mild sensory deprivation for half an hour. During this time, a "sender" observes a randomly chosen target and tries to mentally send this information to the receiver. The receiver speaks out loud during the thirty minutes, describing what he or she can see. This is recorded by the experimenter (who is blind to the target) either by recording onto tape or by taking notes, and is used to help the receiver during the judging procedure. In the judging procedure, the receiver is taken out of the ganzfeld state and given a set of possible targets, from which they must decide which one most resembled the images they witnessed. Most commonly there are three decoys along with a copy of the target itself, giving an expected overall hit rate of 25% over several dozens of trials.

Observations from session 1:

• Could see red light

• Red light turning to pink

• Green ring continuously blinking

• Could see a lot of crack

• Black squiggles turning green.

• Could see the exoskeleton of a bug

• Green veins

• Big red dot moving around

• Small white dots blinking like stars

Observations from session 2:

• Pink, purple peach and violet were the colours seen (when these related colours were shown on the laptop screen)

• Skin colour

• Skeleton and ribs

• Bright orange with yellow strip passing through

• Colours of sunset

• White, aquamarine, blue

• Waves crashing

• Flowers

• Swans

• An eye

• Explosion, with seeds splattering

• Tiny pores

• Big white caterpillar

• Dragonflies

• Crescent moon

Conclusion:

The experiment showed a success rate of 20%, post session 1 and 33% for session 2.

Day 4(18/01/2013): Wine Making

White wine:

  • Mash 2kg of green grapes+400 gms of sugar and add 6 litres of water.
  • Activate 10gm of yeast in luke warm water. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Add the yeast water into the boiled grape solution and pour it into the sanitized fermenting container.Seal the fermenter shut, with a small outlet for a tube.Insert one end of the tube in the fermenter(do not let it dip into the mixture), and make sure there isn't any air room around the tube.Dip the other end of the tube in a liquid disinfectant so as to avoid infected air to flow through the tube.
  • Store container in a dark space for 15-20 days.
