We worked with Spela and Robertina on Chloroplast Isolation.

Mathew's Lab

Zebrafish Hacking: The Plant Animal

We made the CIB buffer, procured DTT from Mathew's Lab, and followed the step by step procedure to isolate chloroplast from tobacco leaves. We then got to witness the micro-injection of chloroplast into a zebra fish embryo! The whole concept of fish carrying out photosynthesis and actually performing part of the experiment was very exciting and truly fascinating! I have heard of similar experiments of 'glow in the dark animals', and the question of whether these experiments are ethically kosher crosses my mind. But then again, most experiments relating to biology - cross pollination in plants, cross breeding animals, etc. have led to revolutionary advancement in human being's understanding of evolution and genetics. How far can we go without crossing an ethical line though?
