Overview

Hosted in Bangalore, India, the most influential city for science and technology in Asia, HackteriaLab 2013 - Bangalore is a project of Hackteria in collaboration with the National Centre for Biological Studies NCBS and the Art-Science Blr project, Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology. The third edition of an intensive two-week transdisciplinary collaboration amongst international and local artists, hackers, activists, scientists, and designers. HackteriaLab 2013 expands on ideas and methodologies about BioArt, DIY biology, ArtScience and BioHacking, developed during the two previous versions of HackteriaLab 2011 - Romainmotier and HackteriaLab 2010 - Dock18/Zürich in Switzerland.

Within the framework of "Hackteria | Open Source Biological Art", the HackteriaLab immersive format plays a key role in experimentation and the development of new models for knowledge sharing and collaboration building, in the emergent artistic practices related to bio- and nanotechnology and science in general.

At HackteriaLab 2013, we will work together on developing prototypes and projects, which can serve as models and kits for other artists and scientists interested in interdisciplinary and emergent fields. These projects will respond to various discussions and issues on synthetic biology, stem cells, nanoparticles, GMOs, policy and ethical issues related to these technologies in Asia and Europe. Furthermore, simple protocols will be designed for use in various art and designs schools and citizen science contexts.

HackteriaLab 2013 will be structured around "Research", the creative research and development phase and the “Reflection”, the public dissemination and communication phase.

You are cordially invited to attend Do It With Others (DIWO) HackteriaLab at NCBS and the accompanied events.

HackteriaLab 2013 is open to the public. Admission free!

HackteriaLab 2013, has been in development since December 2011, see more about visits to NCBS here and a Hackteria Distillery workshops in Jaaga

HackteriaLab 2013 is hosted by hackteria.org, in collaboration with the National Centre for Biological Studies NCBS and the Art-Science Blr project, Srishti School of Art, Design and TechnologySrishti School of Art, Design and Technology. The HackteriaLab 2013 partners are collectively engaged in the exploration of unique pedagogical practices and methodologies, and are at the forefront of the development of new, progressive and alternative knowledge systems in their respective countries.

Over the past 5 years these organisations have been networked through collaborative projects, workshops, and artist and scientist exchanges. These projects have focussed on building an international network and community of artists, designers, scientists and hackers interested to further the art-science discourse through rigorous and critical engagement with ideas, debates and issues related to the sphere of bio- and nanotechnology. Some of the areas collectively investigated have been the nurturing of citizen science through building open and autonomous public labs, bio-printing, DIY microscopy, water quality mapping, microbial telecommunications, bioelectronics, synthetic biology, bio habitats, DIY microfluidics, and plant tissue culture engineering amongst other related subjects.

Tentative Schedule

Schedule || अनुसूची || Zeitplan || スケジュール || Urnik ||Jadwal HackteriaLab 2013 Schedule

We welcome all visitors to join us and engage in a process of artistic and scientific experimentation through the various workshops, talks, lab activities and performances that we have planned. The final schedule of events will be made available here by January 29th, 2013.

28.1 – 29.1: DIWO lab preparations and setup in NCBS

30.1 – 7.2: Research Phase at Hackteria DIWO labs in NCBS

8.2 – 12.2: Reflection Phase, various locations

Time of the public dissemination and communication – open discussion at Hackteria DIWO labs in NCBS.

Research

During the "Research" phase, an international group of artists, scientists and hackers will come together to create a constructive and unique setting of Do It With Others (DIWO) laboratories. Artists and hackers will be paired with researchers and scientists from the National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS) to initiate collaborative research and discussion. They will be encouraged to devise topics for exploration and then actively investigate these topics through experimentation with laboratory infrastructure.

HackteriaLab will host scientists who work on cell evolution, biomechanics, insect flight, toxins, stem cells, muscles, bacteria, crickets, plant biology and butterflies; makers, hackers, activists and educators who work on DIY instruments, 3D-printing, low-cost sensors and playful electronics; and artists who practice sculpture, video art, performance, experimental film, installation, design, sound art and bioart.

Within the framework of "Hackteria | Open Source Biological Art" www.hackteria.org, the HackteriaLab immersive format plays a key role in experimentation and the development of new models for knowledge sharing and collaboration building, in the emergent artistic practices related to diy-bio and science in general.

Reflection

This is the public dissemination and communication phase. The projects, ideas and prototypes developed during the workshops will be placed in a public context to facilitate further discussions and discourse with a larger community. Sites visits, discussions and performances will be held at various locations in Bangalore, including 7 High Street urban think tank, Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology and the HackteriaLab headquarters at the National Centre for Biological Studies (NCBS).

Hackteria is a collection of Open Source Biological Art Projects instigated in February 2009 by Andy Gracie, Marc Dusseiller and Yashas Shetty, after collaboration during the Interactivos?09 Garage Science at Medialab Prado in Madrid. The aim of the project is to develop a rich web resource for people interested in or developing projects that involve DIY bioart, open source software and electronic experimentation. As a community platform hackteria tries to encourage the collaboration of scientists, hackers and artists to combine their expertise, write critical and theoretical reflections, share simple instructions to work with lifescience technologies and cooperate on the organization of workshops, festival and meetings.Since 2009, Hackteria has conducted workshops in Europe (Switzerland, Slovenia, Norway, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, United Kingdom, Germany) , Asia (India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong), Africa (Kenya) and North America (US, Canada).

NCBS

National Center for Biological Sciences (NCBS) Bangalore, India, is a premier research institute with all the necessary facilities that a research scientist may need. Research interests of its faculty lie in the frontier areas of biology. Research at NCBS uses experimental and computational approaches to the study of molecules, cells and organisms. We aim to understand biology at each of these levels to advance an integrated view of life processes. Biological problems not only require multiple approaches for their solution, but also need researchers of varied expertise to collaborate. Collaboration at every level—within NCBS, within the country and internationally—is strongly encouraged. NCBS research groups are small and with specific strengths that make interactions with complementary groups fruitful.

(Art)ScienceBLR

(Art)ScienceBLR's work is at intersection of art-science and pedagogy, creating spaces of dialogue and interaction between artists, designers and scientists. Since 2009, the group has focused on building low-tech laboratories and low cost equipment, making it easier for outsiders to explore the life-sciences. Their work has been awarded prizes and recognition in both the arts and the science contexts.

(Art)ScienceBLR has been supported by the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore The National Center For Biological Sciences,Bangalore and the TATA group.

Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology

Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology was founded in 1996 by the Ujwal Trust with the objective of providing art and design education in an environment of creativity to maximize the individual’s potential. The Ujwal Trust also manages Srishti's sister institution, the prestigious Mallya Aditi International School. Srishti's mission is facilitated by its organizational structure – a “community of learners” comprising industry-experienced faculty and energetic students who continually explore and experiment with art and design pedagogies, aesthetics, values and innovative practices. Srishti's culture encourages thinking, questioning and experimenting to harness the artistic and intellectual potential of each individual and place the institution at the leading edge of contemporary art and design discourse.
