More hacks on the PS3 Eye and Haemocytometer at cellsbutton#04

Together with Akbar, microbiologist and DIY wine fermentation-guru from the agriculture faculty in Gadjah Mada University (UGM) , we have been working on modifying an old microsopy stage, they had lying around in the lab. We removed a lot of the old optical parts, and ended up, mounting the hacked PS3 Eye on the lower part of the stage, so we could adjust focus and use the X-Y stage as before.

It would be a great idea, especially for scientific labs in indonesia to use such old microscopy stages and turn them in to powerful, digital microscopes that can be used for example for cell counting, haemocytometry, digitally store the data for reference and use them in undergrad education.

during the experimentation with the hacked PS3 Eye camera, we figured out that you can highly improve the magnification by replacing the original lens, with one from a cheap webcam… this might sound odd, but just try it out. we ended up with a modified PS3 Eye microscope with a field of view of approximately 380 µm and could clearly detect single cells such as algae, blood sample or yeast

Hackteria talk @ Indonesia Bricolabs

During cellsbutton#04, i was invited for a presentation about the recent developments in the hackteria project. The session was from the Indonesia Bricolabs, innovator presentations, with a radio stream that was followed by several Brico-members in Taganga, Columbia. The session could be followed in IRC chat for Bricolabs.

I presented a talk about “Hackability of Abundant Consumer Electronics for
Bio-Sensing and Lab-Automation”, showing recent work on using the PS3 eye hacked into a microscope, for more quantitative experimentations and also the hacked optical mouse for detection and counting of microorganisms. you can download the slides here:

In addition there were talks by the Insada, a local activist and IT/network community, about their activities in a village in Asmat settlements in Papua during 2009, bringing VoIP to under-developed areas in Indonesia. The final talk was by Arifin Wicaksono from Biochemicals, a start-up company working on environmentally friendly paint.

avatar is a project of hackteria program in playaround09-TechNomads 2009
(currently, the source code/patches can be downloaded from here)
Idea:
Every slide stands for a game cartridge. (e.g., Super Mario Brothers、Pac-Man、Battle City)
Every microorganism stands for an avatar in the game. (e.g., Mario、Pacman、Tank)
When microorganisms meet up, the event of video game will be triggered. (e.g., Mario will grow up [...]
