With hackteria partners (Art)ScienceBLR (IN) and Lifepatch (ID), in spring 2013, we have started a collaborative research project BIO-DESIGN for the REAL WORLD. We are interested in analyzing water quality, with open and mobile labs, as a starting point to have conversations on water.

Gjino Šutić (HR), BioTweaking – Zagreb – enhancing life or improving biological organisms on any level,by available means, to exhibit and use their full potential.

Stefania Druga (RO/DE), HacKidemia
HacKidemia is a mobile invention lab for children where they learn by playing and by doing. The goal is to introduce them to hands-on science and rapid prototyping and work on projects for the community: building solar panels, watter filters, electricity convertors.

GaudiLabs starting MobileLabs Hackaton with an Outdoor-Mobile-WebCam-Microscopy-Session

The hackted webcam microscope is connected to a battery powered raspberry pi and a microbeamer to go out in the field with a very compact unit. Samples are taken from a restricted area and analyzed on spot. See the video:

MobileLabs Hackathon: 10 – 18. June

For one week we will collaborate on ideas of Mobile Labs, Lab-in-a-Box, Environmental monitoring for off-grip field trips, artistic projects and transportability of living systems.

During the last years members of the hackteria network have investigated various approaches on building and using various MobileLabs, MobileKitchenLabs in a hacked Angkringan, in Yogyakarta and Boxology. We explored it’s uses at various festivals and conferences such as MutaMorphosis:Nomadic_Science_Lab#Nomadic_Furniture or Lab-in-a-Van for Ars Electronica’s Create Your World Festival. It is time now to focus more in depth about these concepts and we are inviting artists and hackers to come and join us for a 1 week MobileLabs Hackathon in our new facilities of the BioTehna Lab II, Ljubljana.

Lab-in-a-Box Workshop: 15. June

During this 4h afternoon mini-workshop theMobileLabs Hackathonians will introduce their projects to a group of students, artists, makers. We will make a small Lab-in-a-Box to take home and start your own citizen science and/or artistic research on environment, biology and life itself.

Field Trip to Maribor and Vitanje: 16-18. June

To test our mobility we will go for a field trip of research and workshops to Maribor and Vitanje. In Maribor we’ll work with the local participants at GT22 on using living systems as inputs for visual experimentations, BioCinema, BioVJ, build microscopes, laser projectors and other experimental visualizations.

Now we are going off-grid! To outer space, into the forests and along the streams of Savinjska. Visit to KSEVT, Cultural Centre of European Space Technologies during the afternoon. Followed by hikes and camping in the forests around Vitanje.

Our prototypes will be shown and explained for the next couple of days in Kapelica Gallery.

Everybody is welcome to join us for an evening of Lectures by the participants of the MobileLabs Hackathon, where they will introduce the audience into their projects they have done in Bangalore, Switzerland and everywhere.

This evening will also be the Grand Relaunch Party of our new facilities in the BioTehna Lab II.

BioTehna Laboratory
The BioTehna Lab is a place where we ignite curiosity, experiment and explore interesting connections between nature and technology. Here, artists and scientists creatively combine living systems with innovative engineering solutions and in this way encourage reflection and awareness of the world in which we live in and think about the future.

Exhibitions, workshops and lectures organized by the BioTehna team are just an excuse to involve all those who are interested in active experience, in do-it-yourself (DIY) laboratory processes, hacking various living systems, the integration of living cells and robots, to learn from the different world of plants and animals, detecting super interesting technological tricks and getting to know the secrets which could change the world completely.

BioTehna Laboratory
Je prostor, kjer netimo radovednost, eksperimentiramo in raziskujemo zanimive povezave med naravo in tehnologijo. Infrastructure
Meanwhile we have a decent infrastructure for doing simple biological experiments from kombucha fermentations & algae cultures to microbiological practices and genetic testing; incubator, pressure cookers, oven, various containers, gel-electrophoresis boxes, pumps & tubes, safety goggles, microscopes etc. Additionally the lab has all necessary tools for biohacking, building your own electronics devices and laboratory instruments; power supplies, buts & bolts, table lamps, a set of soldering irons & tools for doing workshops with up to 15 participants.

BioTehna is a part of KiiCS project / Knowledge Incubation in Innovation and Creation for Science, supported by European Commission / 7th Framework Programme and the Swiss Contribution to the enlarged European Union.

After 8 months of running the BioTehna lab inside of Kiberpipa, we’ll have to move on and go upstairs into our new space. The new lab will be setup until the 18th of June, its the glass-chamber in the entrance of the Sou-building on Kersnikova 4. Being just next to the Kapelica Gallery will be most fruitful to bring a larger audience into our labs. For the moment we are packing all the BioArt/Hack Lab into boxes….

L’Observatoire is located on a nice natural part of Singapore. It took us around 20 minutes by taxi to get there (Well, it was actually 45 minutes since the cab driver left us stranger in a mall since he didn’t even bothered to look for the address). The space was very nice and comfortable I must say. There were many seeds near the window, event poster announcements, and three Leica digital microscopes that catch our eyes immediately when we saw it. It looks like Isabelle managed to get a hold of these three microscopes for free as a donation.

After a few chit chat, then come the regular drill of wine making session.  Cuts and slice, blender, sugar, cooking, water, etc. We took the juice from several bananas, SR14 yeast and made a DIY fermenter from a used bottle of a famous brand. Then it’s done. We just have to sit and wait for the yeast do the magic.

Then we ended the session with Disposable Camera hacking. There were loads of disposable cameras that Isabelle have collected and all of us took one each and starting to do surgery procedure on it. It was quite fun and easy, just tear down the camera and took the lenses, attach it to your phone and that’s about it. Beware of the capacitor for the flash though, it contains 300 volts which is enough to give you some burn finger.

Thoughts and Experiences on Workshopology

A bunch of local biohackers and other stinky-fish enthusiasts came together; Urs Gaudenz, dusjagr aka Marc Dusseiller, Gian Gaudenz and Tuuli Utriainen, and we also got some visitors from the Argovian media for an insight interview and documentation abuot what we really do here (…. do we know?).

After checking our first batch of local stinky fish, cultured by Tuuli for 3 days at home, all seemed still quite dark… hmmm, let’s try some other stuff. Let’s go shopping!
